Bouncy, Voluminous Hair

The secret to bouncy, beautiful, voluminous hair?

Yep, velcro rollers. I've had a set of velcro rollers for YEARS and until the past year or so I never quite got the hang of them and now I use them frequently.

Here's what you need:

The key to velcro rollers is to apply heat to your hair right before putting in each roller. I've seen some people do this with a hair dryer and a round brush, but I prefer to curl my hair using a curling iron before wrapping my hair around the roller. Here's what I do:

1. There's really no rhyme or reason to where I start. I've been playing around with whether I start from the bottom layer or the top layer. On this particular day, I started with my top layer at the very front and worked my way down the center of my head all the way to the bottom layer.

2. For each section of hair I roll, I first curl the section with my curling iron. While my hair is still hot, I take a large roller and roll my hair back and pin it with either a duckbill clip or a bobby pin.

3. After the center is done, I roll the sides of my hair back, starting with the top layer. Again, I curl a section, roll it back, and secure it in place.

4. I then roll any remaining hair until my entire head is set in the rollers. I take a volumizing hair spray and spray my entire head and let my hair sit for at least 20 minutes. I usually keep them in longer...sometimes an hour or so.

More Tips:

-- I like to alternate the direction I roll my hair. For the pieces framing my face and on top of my head I like to roll the hair back. For the very bottom layer I usually roll upwards and back. You can play with the direction as much as you want.

-- I also like to alternate the size of rollers I use. For the top layers I like to use the biggest size, and as I work my way down I use the smaller sizes.

-- These rollers can be used on hair with or without extensions. I usually have my clip-in extension in when I use my rollers, which is a little more challenging but can be done if you section your hair properly as you're curling and rolling your hair.

  1. Did you find that the curls lasted a long time? My hair is so thick and doesn't really hold a curl no matter what I do. Your hair came out really good though!

    1. Aw thank you!

My hair is pretty fine/thin but it does hold for a pretty good amount of time, especially if I use a volumizing hair spray, and I leave the curlers in for more than 20 minutes. Sometimes once my rollers are in and I have had them in for a while, I'll blast them with heat from my hair dryer, spray them and let them cool again for a little while longer. I also sometimes use some kind of mousse or volumizing product when my hair is damp or right before I put the rollers in and that seems to help!
